Framer vs WordPress: Cost and Upkeep for a Small Site

PUBLISHED 2026-10-29

Short answer first: Framer vs WordPress for a Small Site. This article covers the detail.

For most small businesses that want a well-designed site they can edit themselves with little upkeep, Framer is the simpler choice: hosting, security updates and image optimisation are included, and you edit on a visual canvas. WordPress suits businesses that need its huge plugin library, such as complex e-commerce, membership or booking systems, or that want to self-host and control the code. It usually needs more maintenance, either your time or someone you pay.

The comparison is often muddled because "WordPress" means two things: WordPress.org, the free open-source software you install on your own hosting, and WordPress.com, a hosted service with paid plans.

Prices checked 29 October 2026 on framer.com/pricing and wordpress.com/pricing. WordPress.com listed Personal at $9 monthly or $4 a month billed yearly, Business at $40 monthly or $25 a month billed yearly, and showed plugin installation among the Business plan's features. Self-hosted costs depend on the host. Prices change; check before you buy.

When is Framer the better choice?

  • You want a distinctive design without hiring a developer.
  • You will edit text and images yourself.
  • Your site is mainly pages, a portfolio, a CMS of projects or posts, and forms.
  • You do not want to manage updates, backups or security patches.
  • You sell a few products or services through payment links or a separate checkout.

When is WordPress the better choice?

  • You need a specific plugin for memberships, courses, complex bookings or a large shop.
  • You want to self-host and own the full stack.
  • You already have a large WordPress site with many pages ranking well.
  • Your team or agency works in WordPress.

One freelancer on X put it simply: they would not move a client from WordPress to Framer "unless the client requests". A working WordPress site with good traffic is not a reason to migrate on its own.

Which is better for SEO?

Neither platform ranks a site by itself. Both let you set page titles and descriptions, clean URLs, sitemaps and structured data. WordPress often relies on SEO plugins for these; Framer has them built in, including an automatic sitemap. What decides rankings is the content, the site's reputation and how well pages answer searches. See page titles and meta descriptions in Framer and schema markup in Framer.

What about maintenance?

On self-hosted WordPress, someone needs to update core, themes and plugins, keep backups and watch for security issues. Outdated plugins are a common way sites get compromised. On Framer, the platform handles hosting and updates; your maintenance is content: prices, hours, photos and forms. See the website maintenance checklist.

How does the CMS compare?

WordPress began as a blogging platform and handles large amounts of content, custom post types and categories, often with plugins. Framer's CMS handles collections such as projects, posts and team members with their own pages, within plan limits on collections and items. For a small business site, Framer's CMS is usually enough. See the Framer CMS explained.

Can you move from WordPress to Framer?

Yes. Rebuild the pages in Framer, import posts into the CMS (Framer's CMS accepts CSV imports), keep the same URLs where you can and set redirects for any that change. Redirects are on Framer's Pro plan. Our guide to moving from Wix or Squarespace to Framer covers the same steps.

What does each cost over a year?

For Framer, a one-site business typically pays the plan (Basic at $10 a month billed yearly), the template if it is not free, and any add-ons. For self-hosted WordPress, add hosting, a premium theme or page builder if you use one, paid plugins, and the time or fees for updates. For WordPress.com, the plan you need depends on whether you need plugins. Write down the features you need first, then price each option against that list.

Which getsites templates can you start with?

Every getsites template is built for a specific trade and opens in a free Framer account. Free templates carry the same licence as paid ones. If you are weighing a template against hiring someone, see website template vs freelancer vs agency costs.
