How to Set Up the Framer CMS: Collections and Pages

PUBLISHED 2026-10-29

Short answer first: What Is the Framer CMS?. This article covers the detail.

The Framer CMS stores repeating content, such as projects, team members, services or blog posts, in collections. Each collection has fields (title, image, date, text and so on), and each entry is an item. A CMS page turns every item into its own page with its own URL, and lists on other pages can show the items automatically. To add a new project or team member in a template, you add an item to the right collection and publish.

Most getsites templates use the CMS for the content that changes most: projects, stylists, schemes, weddings, engagements, routes or posts. Knowing how it works means you can update the site without touching the design.

What are collections, items and fields?

Framer's academy lesson on collections, items and fields describes three parts:

TermWhat it isExample in a template
CollectionA set of content of one typeProjects, Stylists, Weddings
FieldA piece of information every item hasTitle, Cover image, Price, Date
ItemOne entry in the collectionOne project, one stylist

Every item also has a slug, which Framer uses to build the item's URL, such as /projects/harbour-house.

Which field types can you use?

Framer supports text and formatted text, images, links, dates, numbers, colours, toggles, option lists, files and references to items in other collections, among others. Choose the type that matches the content: a date field for dates, an option field for a fixed list of categories, an image field for photos. That makes sorting, filtering and layout work properly.

How do you add an item to a template's collection?

  1. Open the CMS from the toolbar in Framer.
  2. Select the collection, such as Projects.
  3. Click to add a new item.
  4. Fill in each field. Required fields must be filled before you can save.
  5. Check the slug reads well as a URL.
  6. Publish the site.

The item appears on its own CMS page and in any list on the site that shows that collection. Template setup guides usually say which collections exist and what each field is for.

How do CMS pages work?

A CMS page is a single design that Framer reuses for every item in a collection. Elements on the page are connected to fields, so the title shows the item's title and the image shows its cover. Add a new item and it gets a page using the same design. This is how a template can ship with eight sample projects and let you add the ninth in a minute.

How do lists and filters work?

On other pages, a collection list shows items from a collection, such as the latest three posts or all projects. You can sort them, limit how many appear and filter by a field, such as sector or category. Templates often use this for featured work on the home page.

How many collections and items can you have?

According to Framer's pricing page, checked 29 October 2026:

PlanCMS collectionsCMS items
Free (Framer subdomain only)10Not listed; Free projects include up to 1,000 pages
Basic, $10 a month billed yearly21,000
Pro, $30 a month billed yearly10, then more as an add-on2,500, then more as an add-on

Check how many collections a template uses before choosing Basic: a template with three or more collections will need Pro, or you will need to remove some. Limits change, so check the pricing page.

Can you set page titles and SEO for CMS items?

Yes. Framer lets you use CMS fields in the page title and description, so each item has its own. Its help article on page titles and descriptions explains using variables such as the item title. You can also add structured data to CMS pages with field variables. See page titles and meta descriptions in Framer and schema markup in Framer.

Can you add videos to CMS items?

Yes. Add a plain text field for a YouTube or Vimeo URL, or a file field for an uploaded video, and connect it to a video component on the CMS page. See how to add video to a Framer site.

Can AI help fill the CMS?

Framer's help centre describes using Framer Agents to create collections and add content from a description. Check every item it creates before publishing, especially names, prices and dates. For editing templates with the agent, see editing a Framer template with the Framer Agent.

What mistakes should you avoid?

  • Deleting sample items that the home page list relies on, leaving empty sections
  • Leaving demo items published
  • Inconsistent image sizes, which make grids uneven
  • Changing a slug after the page is live without a redirect
  • Using formatted text fields for data you want to filter by

Before launch, check every collection for demo content. Our Framer template launch checklist includes this. Browse all getsites templates.
