In Framer, set the default site title and description in Site Settings, then override them for each page in its Page Settings and republish. For CMS pages, add plain text fields for the title and description and insert them with variables such as {{Title}}, so each item gets its own. Write titles that start with the main topic and stay around 60 characters, and descriptions that summarise the page in about 150 characters; these are common conventions rather than Google rules.
Page titles and meta descriptions are what people see in search results and link previews, so they shape whether someone clicks. Many template sites launch with the template's own titles still in place, or with the same description on every page.
Where do you set page titles in Framer?
Framer's help article describes three levels:
| Level | Where | Applies to |
|---|
| Site default | Site Settings: Site title and Site description | Every page without its own |
| Page override | Page Settings: Title and Page description | One page |
| CMS dynamic | CMS page's Page Settings, with field variables | Every item in a collection |
After changing any of them, republish the site.
How do you set them step by step?
- Open your project's Site Settings.
- Enter a site title and site description that describe the whole business.
- Open Page Settings for each important page, such as home, services, about and contact.
- Enter a custom title and page description for each.
- For CMS collections, create plain text fields for the meta title and description and fill them for each item.
- In the CMS page's settings, enter the variables, for example {{Title}} and {{Description}}.
- Save and republish.
- Check the live pages' source or a link preview to confirm.
Framer also lets you combine static text with variables, such as the item title followed by your brand name.
How long should titles and descriptions be?
Google does not set a fixed character limit for either. Its guidance on title links and snippets asks for descriptive, concise, unique text, and Google may shorten or rewrite what you supply. The common convention is:
- Title: about 50 to 60 characters, so it is less likely to be cut off.
- Description: about 150 to 160 characters.
Shorter is fine if it is clear. What matters more is that each is accurate and different from every other page.
How do you write a good page title?
- Start with the main topic, the words a customer would search: "Dental implants in Leeds" before "Smile Clinic".
- Add the business name at the end, if there is room.
- Make every title unique. Two pages with the same title compete with each other.
- Describe the page, not the business, for inner pages.
- Avoid stuffing in several keywords separated by bars.
Examples:
| Page | Weak | Better |
|---|
| Home | Home | Accountant in Bristol for Sole Traders, Hart & Co |
| Service | Services | Self Assessment Tax Returns, Fixed Fee, Hart & Co |
| About | About Us | About Priya Shah, Chartered Accountant, Hart & Co |
These are illustrative names.
How do you write a good meta description?
Say what the page offers and who it is for, include a specific detail such as a price or location, and give a reason to click. Do not repeat the title word for word. Write in plain sentences. Google may show a different snippet from the page text if it judges that more relevant to the search.
What about social images?
The same Framer help article covers social preview images, set as defaults in Site Settings and per CMS item through an image field. A clear social image matters when people share your link in messages or on social platforms.
What are common mistakes on template sites?
- The template name still in the site title
- The same description on every page
- Demo CMS items still published with demo titles
- Titles that say "Home" or "Page"
- Descriptions with placeholder text
- Pages you do not want found, such as thank-you pages, still visible to search engines. Framer's page settings let you control search visibility.
Our Framer template launch checklist includes these checks.
Do titles and descriptions matter for AI search?
They help any system understand what a page is about, but AI assistants also read the page itself. Clear titles work best alongside clear page content, an accurate about page and consistent business details. See getting your local business recommended by ChatGPT and schema markup in Framer.
Which templates does this apply to?
Every getsites template comes with demo titles and descriptions that you should replace before launch. If you are moving an existing site, keep titles for pages that already rank well and set redirects for any URLs that change; see moving from Wix or Squarespace to Framer.
Frequently asked questions
How do I change the page title in Framer?
Open the page's Page Settings, enter a custom Title, save and republish. For the site-wide default, use Site Settings.
What is the character limit for meta descriptions?
Google sets no fixed limit. About 150 to 160 characters is a common convention so the description is less likely to be cut off.
Can Framer CMS pages have their own meta titles?
Yes. Add plain text fields for the title and description in the CMS, then use variables such as {{Title}} in the CMS page's settings.
Why does Google show a different title from mine?
Google may rewrite titles and snippets if it thinks other text on the page better describes it for a search. Clear, accurate, unique titles are less likely to be rewritten.
Should the business name be in every title?
It is common to add it at the end. Put the page's main topic first.
