To hand over a Framer website to a client, transfer the project to the client's own Framer account or workspace with File > Transfer Project, then have the client activate a site plan. According to Framer's help centre, the site stays live and the custom domain stays connected during a transfer, and you can remain on the project as an editor if the client wants you to. Before the transfer, move the domain, forms, analytics and any third-party accounts into the client's name and give them a short written guide.
Freelancers and small studios ask how to do this cleanly because a messy handover causes problems months later: a domain in the designer's name, forms still emailing the designer or a client who cannot log in.
What does Framer's transfer do?
Framer's help article on transferring a site describes the process:
| What | What happens |
|---|
| The site | Stays live throughout |
| The custom domain | Stays connected |
| Your site plan | Cancelled when the client accepts; unused time is credited to you |
| The client's plan | The client activates a plan on their side |
| Your access | You can stay on as an editor if invited |
Moving a project between workspaces follows the same approach. Check Framer's current article before you start, since the steps can change.
What should you prepare before the transfer?
- Agree what is included: pages, CMS collections, edits after launch and support time.
- Get final sign-off on content, in writing.
- Replace all demo content: text, photos, CMS items, page titles and descriptions.
- Connect forms to the client's own email, sheet or webhook and test them. See Framer form submissions.
- Check the domain is registered to the client, with renewal details they control.
- Set up analytics and Search Console under the client's account, or add them as owner.
- List third-party tools, such as booking, payments or newsletters, and make sure each account belongs to the client.
- Run your launch checks. See the Framer template launch checklist.
How do you transfer the project step by step?
- Ask the client to create a Framer account, or a workspace if they have a team.
- In Framer, open the project and choose File > Transfer Project.
- Enter the client's account or workspace.
- The client accepts the transfer.
- The client activates a site plan so the site keeps its paid features.
- Confirm the site is live and the domain loads.
- If you agreed ongoing support, ask the client to invite you as an editor.
What about the template licence?
If the site uses a bought template, check the licence allows client work. getsites templates do: the licence says one licence covers as many published sites as you like, client work included, with no extra licence. It does not allow reselling or sharing the template or its remix link, so hand over the finished project, not the remix link. See Framer template licences for client sites.
Demo photography in getsites templates is licensed for demonstration only. Replace it with images the client has rights to before launch.
What should the handover guide include?
A one or two page document the client keeps:
- Logins: which accounts exist and who owns them (do not put passwords in the document; use a password manager)
- How to edit text and images on the canvas
- How to add a CMS item, such as a new service, team member or post
- How to publish changes
- Where form submissions go
- Domain and renewal dates
- What you will and will not support, and how to ask for help
- What not to touch, such as custom code or layout components
A short screen recording of each common task often helps more than written steps. Store the guide somewhere the client controls, such as their own shared drive, and date it so later edits are easy to track.
How do you train the client?
Book a 30-minute call. Have the client share their screen and make each change themselves: edit a heading, swap an image, add a CMS item, publish. People remember what they did more than what they watched.
What goes wrong in handovers?
- The domain stays in the designer's name
- Forms keep sending to the designer
- Analytics, booking or payment accounts belong to the designer
- The client never activates a plan and the site drops to free features
- Nobody knows who renews what
- Demo content or demo photography is still live
How do you price ongoing support?
Agree it in writing before the handover: a fixed number of edits per month, an hourly rate or no ongoing support. See website template vs freelancer vs agency costs for how clients compare options, and how to choose a website template for picking one that suits the client's business.
